At the Brandenburg we invite you to discover the music of the baroque and early classical periods in a whole new way. We bring to life the original colours of baroque and classical masterpieces from centuries ago, with the beautiful sound of instruments of the period.
The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra is Australia’s national baroque orchestra. Under the charismatic leadership of the Orchestra’s Co-founder and Artistic Director Paul Dyer AO, we feature the finest period musicians from around Australia. From our very first concert in the Sydney Opera House to a sold out London Proms performance that had ‘everyone roaring for more’, we continue to achieve artistic excellence at the highest level. As a member of the Australia Council’s Major Performing Arts Group and winner of five ARIA awards for Best Classical Album, the Brandenburg has become a leader in Australia’s cultural landscape.
Our concerts include the music of well known composers such as Mozart, Vivaldi and Handel, as well as lesser known composers, rare works and unusual instruments.
Each year we invite some of the most spectacular artists working on the international stage today to help us bring to life the music of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Guest artists from around the globe have shared the Brandenburg stage, from South America and Portugal to Italy, Germany, USA, France, Canada, UK, Switzerland and Japan, to name a few.
To hear our unique sound, you can experience our live concerts in Sydney’s City Recital Hall Angel Place, the Melbourne Recital Centre, and in regional venues around Australia. You can also visit our website, listen to ABC Classic FM or enjoy the music on one of our sixteen CD recordings on the ABC Classics label.
And if you’re wondering about our name? It comes from the Brandenburg Concertos written in 1721 by a musical genius named J.S. Bach, considered to be the father of baroque music.
