In 1770, a 14 year old Austrian boy sat in Rome’s glorious Sistine Chapel listening to a choir perform Allegri’s Miserere. Afterwards, he was able to write it out from memory after only a single hearing. The boy’s name was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and this musical prodigy had already written more symphonies than he had years. Decades later, a young German boy exhibited a similar extraordinary gift for music. His name was Felix Mendelssohn and, like Mozart, his musical abilities as a child bordered on the miraculous.
Experience the stunning creations of these brilliant minds, as the Brandenburg performs Australia’s favourite Mozart work, his Clarinet Concerto in A major. This gorgeous work, voted by thousands of ABC Classic FM listeners as their favourite Mozart, will be performed on basset clarinet (a clarinet of the period) by Brandenburg principal artist Craig Hill. Then discover the dramatic beauty of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, written by the composer at age 19, with guest concertmaster and Brandenburg favourite Madeleine Easton. Finally, be swept away by the breathtaking grandeur of Mendelssohn’s famous Hebrides Overture, better known as ‘Fingal’s Cave’, in a thrilling tribute to classical music’s beautiful minds.

What the critics said:
Reviewer’s rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“With a smooth and smudgy tone, Hill initially seemed like an introverted soloist, talking to the orchestra rather than the audience, but his performance was none the worse for it. Indeed, once the ear tuned into his delicate phrasing it was immensely rewarding, revealing new depths…
“Easton was a bold diva, revelling in the drama of the operatic banter between orchestra and soloist. A magnificent performance”
Sydney Morning Herald 26 October 2012
“In the hands (and soul) of the Brandenburg, it leaps to life in a transporting and transfixing way”
Megaphone Oz, 27 October 2012

lower register was incredibly liquid, able to speak the language and accent of the flutes and bassoons, the high register though was very bright, even sharp at times, carrying without penetrating, and always very buoyant. Her style is distinct too, self-possessed and determined, but also humble in a way, never showy”.
